Being part of our local WI, we usually have a summer gathering to look forward to. In the past we've enjoyed an afternoon tea, some ceramic painting and a lovely walk around a local garden.
But this year trying to organise something has been very different. We needed an outdoor space big enough for us to social distance 2m plus have a bit of shade for up to 30 people. Luckily a local village hall I knew well had a nice enclosed outdoor space. This hall has very happy memories for me as it is where Head Gardener and I had our wedding reception, plus the children went to play group and pre-school and we had a failed attempt at puppy training there too. Happily for the WI members we were able to use the grounds for a small fee and last weekend we managed to have our WI summer gathering.
A lengthy risk assessment was written and carried out. Everyone had to bring their own chairs, food and drink. Hand sanitiser was available on arrival plus a quick temperature check and a note of contact details for track and trace. But it was so worth it. Just to physically see some lovely friends ( obviously at a distance) and to enjoy a summer afternoon chatting, laughing and generally catching up was wonderful.
So with a bit of thought and planning we can adapt to a new norm.... but we still could have flowers on the table to make everything seem alright :)
